Mastering Virtual I/O Server Upgrades

This course is designed for system administrators responsible for managing and maintaining Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) environments, IT professionals who need to upgrade VIOS to version 4.1 or learn about VIOS upgrade processes, technical staff involved in IBM Power server virtualization who want hands-on experience with the viosupgrade utility, and individuals with basic knowledge of VIOS or virtualization concepts who seek to deepen their understanding of VIOS upgrade procedures.

After this course participants should be able to:

• Describe the Virtual I/O Server upgrade requirements
• Describe different methods available for upgrading a VIOS to version 4.1
• Discuss best practices for upgrading a VIOS
• Describe the process of upgrading a VIOS using the viosupgrade tool
• Perform a VIOS upgrade using media

• Unit 1: Virtual I/O server upgrades (1 hour and 20 minutes)
• Exercise 1: Accessing the lab environment (35 minutes)
• Unit 2: VIOS upgrade methods (2 hours)
• Exercise 2: Preparing a VIOS for an upgrade (40 minutes)
• Unit 3: The viosupgrade tool (2 hours and 10 minutes)
• Exercise 3: Upgrading a VIOS with the viosupgrade tool (1 hour)

• Students should have basic knowledge of IBM Power Systems, PowerVM virtualization, and Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) administration.
• Familiarity with VIOS command-line operations and virtualized storage and networking is recommended.
