PRINCE2 is called PRINCE2® 6th edition from now on. What does the change of the name mean for this project management method? Why is PRINCE2® still relevant? Global Knowledge instructor Erik Knapen explains.

What is the new name of PRINCE2®?

PRINCE2® is now called PRINCE2® 6th edition. This is only a small change, because other than the name, nothing is changing in PRINCE2® 6th edition.

By now we're used to the current version of PRINCE2®. The manual was last revised in 2017, that's when PRINCE2® made a shift from just theory towards implementation. The method stayed the same but is described differently.

PRINCE2® certification is executed by People Cert on behalf of PRINCE2®-owner Axelos. To pass your Foundation exam, you'll have to answer 60 questions and for the practitioner exam, you'll have to anser 68 questions. For both exams a pass mark of 55 percent applies.

Is PRINCE2® still relevant?

Yes.If you are involved in projects, it doesn't matter in which position, it's important to know the rules of the game. PRINCE2® is perfect to find out what these rules are.

Even when your organization is using a different approach to project management, it's still good to have knowledge about PRINCE2®. The foundation level good for everyone's resume.

What about Agile? PRINCE2® isn't Agile, right?

That's right. PRINCE2® is perfect for traditional projects where you have to make important decisions in advance. Decisions you'd rather not change your mind about.

But you can use PRINCE2® in a changing environment. You can apply Agile methodes in PRINCE2®.

Is that called PRINCE2® Agile?

It sure is. PRINCE2® Agile is PRINCE2® with Agile Practices. SCRUM, Lean and Kanban are added to the mix. PRINCE2® Agile also hands out behavior and focus areas.

Is PRINCE2® Agile something for me?

PRINCE2® Agile has a foundation and a practicioner level.

If you've already got knowledge of PRINCE2®, the step to PRINCE2® Agile is relatively small. If you're new you can decide to follow one or the other. Your choice depends on the situation of your organization.

I'd like to give you one last piece of advice

Project management is common sense for most part. But you don't know what you don't know. If you follow a training course, you figure out what you don't know. You get insights in how to do something and how you should do something. Following a training course means leaping forward in your career.
